Chapter Eleven

"You know it's me, don't you?"

Jack had all but shoved us into the restroom and slammed the door so that no one would overhear our conversation. He'd also dropped the fake southern accent.

Leo had hopped up on the closed toilet seat and waited patiently for the blueberry catnip morsel. I was wary of his silence, but then again, he was savoring the delicious treat.

"Yes, we know it's you, Jack. I don't understand what is happening here. Are you undercover or are you actually one of these robbers?" I asked bluntly since we were on somewhat of a time constraint. Unfortunately, I couldn't ask him about the hexed mistletoe bundles hanging from the ceiling all over the bank. He shouldn't have the knowledge that I was a witch or that Leo was a familiar, and I didn't want to give our secret away if that was still the case. "Fill us in so that we can help."

"I should be offended that you would even have to ask me if I was involved in a criminal enterprise, but I guess after Heidi and I broke things off, it's understandable." Jack used a gloved hand to cover a sneeze. "Was it my allergies that gave me away? The second that I saw you and Leo inside the bank, I knew that might be a problem."

I caught sight of Leo wiggling his haunches, and I suddenly realized why he'd been so quiet. He'd enjoyed his treat, and he was now getting into his attack position. I couldn't very well warn him verbally, because as I'd already mentioned, Jack had no idea about the existence of the supernatural. The best decision that I could make at the moment was to step in between Leo and Jack, and I completed that action by taking one step.

I had purposefully placed myself smack dab in between Jack and Leo.

Probably not one of my better decisions, but I couldn't have Jack harmed by my familiar while he was undercover as a bank robber. He was our ticket out of here. First, I needed to convince him to let us help without somehow revealing that I was a witch.

"It doesn't matter," Jack muttered as he righted his hat that had slid to the right side of his head. "Listen very carefully, Raven. I've been working undercover for the better part of a year. Jingle knows that I'm a state police detective, but I've done my best to make him believe that I've gone over to the dark side. It took a while, but his girlfriend now believes that I'm the leader of the heist group that hit three banks in New Haven in a single day. It's the reason that she allowed me to take lead on this robbery. Only she isn't the one whose idea it was to rob one of the safe deposit boxes. I want her contact. The mastermind in question has been planning this heist for a very long time. Unfortunately, Jolly won't reveal her source.
